Behold the birth of an Empire.
Iowa's New Energy Empire began back in 1992 when the first wind generator
was built by the Spirit Lake School District. Then, in 1996, the first
farmer-owned biodiesel production facility was built by West Central
Cooperative in Ralston, Ia. Iowa's dominance in renewable fuel continued
when the first farmer-owned ethanol plant came to the state in 2001. Today,
Iowa's Energy Empire is alive and well. Read on to learn about everything
Iowa farmers are doing to ensure a clean and renewable future both within
the state and nationwide.
Renewable energy greatly reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions and America’s dependence on foreign oil. The problem is that most Americans don’t realize that renewable fuel is readily available across the United States. We aim to change that.
With Iowa’s strong backbone in agriculture, we can help develop the burgeoning industry of renewable energy through our efforts in wind, biomass, biodiesel, carbon credit and more. Through this campaign we want to educate Americans and Iowans about the important role that agriculture plays in renewable energy and how they can participate.
How we built the empire
Iowa produces one-quarter of the U.S. Supply of grain ethanol.
Iowa produces twice as much ethanol as any other state.
Capacity will double in less than five years.
Ethanol is blended with 40% of the U.S. gasoline supply.
